nomatteryourvehiclein2019yourcareergofar_1_original๐ŸŒŸCareer Success ~ 10 Key Ideas for Self-Coaching your Way to Victory – this week, this month and this year ๐Ÿค—

One can safely say we are all awake to the realities of 2019 now. Gone is the warm feeling of Christmas and the euphoria of a New Year. So for the year before us and whatever targets, milestones, goals, etc you have committed to; and let’s talk about how you set yourself up for success. I have had to reflect on this as I started working on Ennie’s Big 5 Plan๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ™ƒ. I thought about past success and what helped me achieve victory. Below I offer a Career Success ~ 10 Key Ideas Self-Coaching Guide which you can adapt and apply to help you achieve your Career Plan or plans in other Life Wellbeing areas ~

๐Ÿ”…Career Success ~ 10 Key Ideas for Self-Coaching Guide

1. Have a Plan ๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ”ข~ for everything we aspire to become or to have, we usually know two things…the end (Z) and our starting point (A). Where things get messy, but also the biggest space for setting yourself up for success is the game plan or strategy you put in place to move from A to Z. How you implement that plan, review it regularly (weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually), how you learn and adjust course and actions taken, that is the game changer and usually the difference between succeeding and failing. A plan that is regularly reviewed and adjusted is a major resource and practical aspect of setting yourself up for success.

2. Adapt to your Context ~ this is the environment in which you hope to achieve your career goals. Context includes your workplace, your family circumstances and the country of residence and scope of work – regional or global. Contexts change, some rapidly than others, so continuously assess what’s possible and what’s not where you are and make adjustments to your plan of action. Here my home country Zimbabwe๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ comes to mind. Most of us are still shellshocked by the recent events and the rapid deterioration from bad to unbelievable blanket abuse of a whole nation. Despite this, people still have career plans, hope for a better life and remain resolved in getting it. To succeed in these aspirations, agile review and actions based on assessing what’s possible at this moment and in the future remains critical for career success.

3. Mindset and Habits ~ the attitude you approach your career targets with is key. Go after your career goals with grit, laser focus and determined belief in yourself and you will see early successes. However, if you procastinate, you delay your own career success and miss opportunities for progress. So change any habits that limit your chances of thriving in your career. Furthermore, if you don’t believe in your ability to succeed, you remain stuck in the painful space of dreaming versus reality. You task is to: Work on what’s holding you back and you will have a story of triumph to talk about soon.๐Ÿ“š

4. Time, Energy and Commitment ~ here think about how your 24hrs is utilised and what you give both physical and emotional energy. Reflect on whether currently its is positively weighed towards your career goals or not. Only you can define what commitment to your career success looks like. Consider your time, energy and resources allocated to it. Also consistency, accountability for set actions and staying the course during tough patches. Remember, what you give time, energy and commit to, is what expands in your career and life ~ in volume and space. ๐Ÿ“ฃ๐Ÿ”Š

5. Research and Learn ~ there is no substitute for knowing more about what you hope to achieve in your career as you set out on your journey ~ no matter the stage in life you are in. Reseach as much as you can about your area of focus. Read books, read blogs, watch videos, listen to podcasts, search online, follow experts and have informational interviews with people who have done what you want to do or anyone who can add wisdom to your cause. Also test things, record notes, track your own insights via a journal, share knowledge to learn, do a course, follow trends and do all this regularly. Equipped with information and knowledge, your career plan of action has a better chance of succeeding.

6. Resources and Practicalities ~ there are always resources to consider to help you put in place the practical things needed to achieve your career goals. Resources here include money, people, time, networks, social capital, tangible assets, materials etc. The practicalities could include capital to start a venture if self-employment is your path, fees to do a course or to apply for work permits, money to pay memberships to professional associations, appropriate attire for your goals such as interviewing, securing people to work with, reworking your time per day to carve out dedicated space for your career actions, getting materials like notebooks or a machine etc. What is critical is knowing what you practically need to achieve your career goals and having that in place.

7. Network for Support and Accountability ~ sustaining action, staying motivated, accountable and on course is what most of us struggle with. To overcome this, you need to assemble a Network for Success to support you and to hold you accountable to your career commitments. Your network of 25 to 30 people should include different roles and each should connect you to a wider network beyond yours…and these should all be active relationships. Some critical roles for you to map and assess your current network against are:
~ Friends – those few close ones who provide social support no matter what
~ Accountability Partners – those you systematically account to for actions
~ Inspiration Partners – those who affirm you and inspire you to try or do more
~ Mentors, Coaches or Advisors – who offerr structured support
~ Collaborators – anyone who can work with you on your actions or projects.
~ Sponsors – this is the most critical group of people in career management – they are the ones who have the ability to advocate on your behalf or open doors for you.
You can do well alone in career management…but lean on your network and see great things start to happen!

8. Routines and Systems ~ staying on course is a challenge that can be addressed by the routines and systems you put in place to support your career goals.
~ Your bedtime routine determines the start of your new day.
~ Your sleeping habits determine your energy levels and alertness.
~ Your morning routine determines effective use of time and the tone of your day.
~ Your end of day routine determines how you close the day and learn from it to make adjustments for tomorrow.
Routines reflect your time allocation, your level of discipline and what you value, so they make or break your career goals daily.

9. Obstacles and Challenges ~ a risk analysis is necessary for you to know what could derail your career plan. These could be internal to you or external to you. Map those things about your personality, self beliefs, habits, limitations in knowledge, skills and abilities etc that could derail you. Note issues external to you like your context, relationships, work and family demands that could be challenges. Now plan to address them. The best way to deal with anyย obstacle is to plan for it and face it head-on.

10. Rewards and Recognition ~ while we expect the world, family and friends to recognise and reward our efforts and career achievements, sometimes this does not happen. Several reasons may account for this, but the reality is that usually what we value and have prioritised is not the same for them. So do think about how you will reward yourself and recognise your efforts and career victories, whether big or small. This is critical for self-motivation๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Ask anyone who has succeeded in their career….and they will tell you they had in place a few things that set them up for success ~ how about you?๐Ÿค”
